The most recent Maternal Health Task Force quarterly newsletter highlighted postpartum hemorrhage and pre-eclampsia/eclampsia – the two leading causes of maternal deaths globally – and focused on magnesium sulphate for treatment of eclamptic convulsions.
In response, Sharif Mohammed Ismail Hossain, Ending Eclampsia deputy director, advocates for the use of antihypertensive drugs to manage and prevent pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, which would lower the need for magnesium sulphate in emergency situations.
